Double chance predictions: how they work
Double chance lets you cover two of the three match results with one selection. It is the natural market when you trust one side not to lose but are not sure it will win. The table above ranks today’s matches by their strongest double chance option, using probabilities from our goal model.
The three double chance options
- 1X - home win or draw. Loses only if the away team wins.
- X2 - away win or draw. Loses only if the home team wins.
- 12 - either team wins. Loses only on a draw.
Each option is simply the sum of two 1X2 probabilities. If the home team has a 45% chance of winning and the draw 27%, 1X is 72%. Settlement is on the result after 90 minutes; extra time and penalties do not count.
How our model works
These predictions come from the LiveScores24x7 goal model. For every team we measure attack and defence strength at home and away over the last 12 months, compared with its league average, and shrink small samples towards that average so a few freak results do not distort the picture. Multiplying the strengths gives the expected goals (xG) of each side in this match, and a Poisson distribution turns those two numbers into a probability for every possible score. The model is refreshed every hour for all matches in the next eight days. It is deliberately simple and transparent: it does not know about tonight’s line-up or a coach under pressure, so always combine it with the team news on the match page.
Draw rates decide double chance value
The draw is the key number in this market: it is the outcome that 1X and X2 add to a win, and the one that 12 bets against. In our data about one match in four ends level, but the rate ranges from under 20% to around 40% depending on the league.

- High-draw leagues, often in South America and second divisions such as Ligue 2, make 1X and X2 attractive for slight favourites.
- Low-draw leagues, notably several women’s top divisions and Norway’s Eliteserien, are where 12 makes most sense.
When double chance makes sense
- A home side you trust not to lose against a better team: 1X protects you against the draw.
- An away favourite in a tricky ground: X2 covers a hard-fought draw.
- Two attacking teams that rarely draw: 12.
- Close matches in high-draw leagues, where a single result is genuinely hard to call.
Double chance vs draw no bet vs Asian handicap
Draw no bet refunds your stake on a draw instead of paying out, so it pays more than double chance when your team wins. An Asian handicap of +0.5 is identical to double chance, and +0.25 sits between the two. Our Asian handicap predictions and the handicap guide explain the difference in detail.
Mistakes to avoid
- Backing 1X on big favourites. When the home team is already 70% to win, adding the draw gives odds so short they rarely offer value.
- Stacking double chances in long accumulators. They look safe individually, but six legs at 80% win together only about one time in four.
- Ignoring the draw rate of the league. The same probabilities mean different value in different leagues.
