Asian handicap predictions: how our AH tips work

The list above shows today’s Asian handicap predictions: for each match, the handicap line our model favours and the side it expects to cover it. Asian handicap removes the draw, or part of it, by giving one team a virtual head start. That makes it the best way to back a favourite at a fair price, or to back an underdog to stay close. This guide explains how the lines work, how our predictions are built and what the data says about winning margins in each league.

What is an Asian handicap?

A handicap adds or subtracts goals from one team’s final score before settling the bet. The favourite gets a minus line (for example −1) and the underdog a plus line (+1). There are three types of line:

Half-goal lines (−0.5, −1.5, +0.5…)

No refund is possible. −0.5 is the same as a plain win; +0.5 means win or draw. −1.5 needs a win by two or more goals.

Whole-goal lines (0, −1, +1…)

If the adjusted result is a draw, the stake is refunded (a “push”). On −1, a one-goal win returns your stake; a two-goal win wins the bet. Line 0 is also called “draw no bet”.

Quarter lines (−0.25, −0.75, +0.25…)

The stake is split in half between the two nearest lines. −0.75 is half on −0.5 and half on −1: a one-goal win returns half the stake as winnings and half as a refund. Our complete guide to handicap betting walks through every line, and the Asian handicap settlement calculator shows exactly what each result pays.

How our Asian handicap predictions are made

An Asian handicap prediction is a prediction about the goal difference, not just the winner. Our model:

  • estimates the expected goals of both teams from attack and defence strength, home advantage and recent form;
  • uses a Poisson goal model to calculate the probability of every final score;
  • groups those scores by winning margin (win by 1, by 2, by 3+, draw, lose by 1…);
  • compares each handicap line and highlights the one where the favoured side has the clearest edge;
  • adds context from our match previews, such as rotation before a European match or a missing key player, which affects how dominant a favourite is likely to be.

Why it matters: a team can be a 65% favourite to win and still be a poor −1.5 pick if most of its wins are by a single goal. The winning margin, not the win itself, decides handicap bets.

Winning margins by league

In the domestic leagues we track, the average winning margin over the last 12 months was about 1.3 goals. Around 39% of matches were decided by exactly one goal and about 35% by two or more, with the rest drawn. These shares decide how attractive minus lines are in each league.

What the numbers tell you:

  • Leagues with many 2+ goal wins, often women’s leagues and very uneven domestic leagues, suit favourites on −1 and −1.5.
  • Leagues with many one-goal results and draws, such as the Argentine leagues and Ligue 2, favour the underdog with a plus handicap. +0.5 and +1 lines win often there.
  • The home win rate and the margin together show how dominant home sides really are, not just how often they win.

The leagues with the fewest big wins, where plus handicaps tend to do well:

How to choose the right line

  • Back a favourite you trust on −0.5 or −0.75 rather than taking very short 1X2 odds. You get a better price and, on −0.75, part of your stake back on a one-goal win.
  • Use −1.5 only for favourites that win big: teams that score a lot and face weak defences.
  • Use +0.25 or +0.5 for underdogs that rarely lose heavily. Well-organised defensive teams cover these lines often.
  • Use line 0 (draw no bet) when you lean towards one side but fear a draw.

Asian handicap mistakes to avoid

  • Treating quarter lines like whole lines. Always check what happens on a one-goal win; the settlement calculator helps.
  • Laying big handicaps with favourites late in the season, when they may rotate or ease off with the result secured.
  • Ignoring the odds. A handicap line is only a good pick when the price is better than the fair odds implied by our probability. Use the expected value calculator to check.
  • Combining many handicaps. Each pick is roughly a coin-flip by design, so accumulators lose most of the time.

Frequently asked questions

What does Asian handicap −1 mean?

The team starts the match one goal behind. If it wins by two or more goals the bet wins; if it wins by exactly one goal the stake is refunded; a draw or defeat loses.

What is the difference between Asian handicap and European handicap?

A European handicap keeps the draw as a separate outcome after the adjustment, so there are three possible results and no refunds. Asian handicap removes the draw, and whole and quarter lines allow full or partial refunds.

What does Asian handicap −0.75 mean?

Your stake is split between −0.5 and −1. If the team wins by two or more, both halves win. If it wins by exactly one goal, half wins and half is refunded. A draw or defeat loses the whole stake.

Is Asian handicap 0 the same as draw no bet?

Yes. On line 0 your stake is returned if the match is drawn, and the bet wins or loses normally otherwise.

Does extra time count for Asian handicap?

No. Asian handicap bets are settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, unless the bookmaker states otherwise for a specific market.

Why use Asian handicap instead of 1X2?

Asian handicap removes or reduces the draw, offers fairer prices on favourites and lets you back an underdog to stay close. Bookmakers’ margins on Asian lines are also often lower than on 1X2.
